AEDC Marketing Efforts Receive National Honors

The Anchorage Economic Development Corporation received an Excellence in Economic Development Award for its 2009 Annual Report from the International Economic Development Council.

Bill Popp, president and CEO of the economic development corporation accepted the award at a ceremony last month during the IEDC Annual Conference in Columbus, Ohio.

"It's great to be recognized by our peers for our quality of work," said Popp. "AEDC is working hard to place Anchorage on the top of the map as the best city to live, work and play and this recognition reinforces that we're well on our way."

Anchorage Named One of the Nation's 100 Best Communities

The efforts of Anchorage civic and community leaders were honored today when America's Promise Alliance (the Alliance), the nation's largest partnership organization dedicated to youth and children, announced the city had been named a winner of the Alliance's 100 Best Communities for Young People (100 Best) competition presented by ING, a global financial services company and leading provider of retirement plans and programs for teachers. Its 2010 recognition marks the fourth win for Anchorage in the competition, and one of only 100 cities in the nation.

Alaska #14 best in TheAtlantic.com
"The Best- and Worst-Performing State Economies in America" list  
Debt per capita: $14,260 (50th)
Unemployment rate: 7.7% (18th)
Home price change (2006-2009): 9.2% (20th)
Median household income: $66,953 (4th)

While maintaining an above average overall ranking on our list, on a number of metrics, Alaska's rank is at one extreme or the other. On the one hand, it has the second lowest percentage of population below the poverty line, the third highest percentage of people over 25 who have graduated from high school, and the fourth highest median income per household. On the other hand, it has the third highest percentage of residents without health insurance and the absolute highest debt per capita. Full list available here.

AEDC promotes within; Krawchuk new development coordinator

The Anchorage Economic Development Corporation has promoted Dana Krawchuk to development coordinator. This move bolsters the economic development corporation's efforts to support business growth across industries in Anchorage and Southcentral Alaska.

Alaska Featured in Los Angeles Times article about the new film industry

The article focuses on the "Everybody Loves Whales" film which recently started shooting in Alaska. In addition to describing the current project, the article also points out the budding fill industry and the importance the Alaska Film Production Incentive Program in getting it off the ground.
