“2010 Lead On! For Peace and Equality” Youth Leadership Conference Focuses on Domestic Violence Prevention Activities
The Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault is hosting the “2010 Lead On! For Peace and Equality in Alaska Youth Leadership Conference” from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 9 – 11 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Anchorage. The event, held during October Domestic Violence Awareness Month, brings youth from across Alaska together to learn about relationships and non-violence, culture and identity and about how to be leaders in their communities to change social norms around violence. Lead On! is one of the events sponsored by ANDVSA as part of a comprehensive approach to violence prevention in our state. “This is an exciting chance to bring youth together,” said ANDVSA Executive Director Peggy Brown. “The conference gives teens a chance to share what they are doing, learn new skills and go back to their towns and villages re-committed to making a difference.”
Along with interactive presentations, a policy panel on interacting with local, state and tribal policy leaders, and music and art activities, youth leaders will discuss serious issues around healthy relationships and non-violence. Youth from across Alaska will talk about some of the youth-led prevention projects currently happening across the state and workshops include youth exploring topics around healthy relationships, sharing their story or on making choices when faced with peer pressure.
