State Chamber of Commerce Legislative Tie-In Lunch Program Narrative Wednesday October 28, 2009 12:00 - 1:30 pm
Organization: Alaska Partnership for Economic Development (APED)
Topic: Planning for Alaska's Economic Future
The Alaska Partnership for Economic Development (APED) is a consortium of economic development organizations from around the state. APED's mission is to leverage the existing economic development programs in the state and collaborate on multi-regional and statewide programs/projects.
This initiative called "Alaska Forward: Toward a Next Generation Economy" will look at the position of Alaska and its economic regions in the global economy, benchmark the state against a reference group of economic regions, and examine current approached to economic development compared to "best practices".
APED recently was awarded a $500,000 grant from the Denali Commission to begin creating a comprehensive economic development strategy for Alaska. The APED Board has selected a partnership of some of the top consultants in the country to examine today's economy and key industry trends, the state's strengths and weaknesses, and prepare the foundation for economic development strategies in Alaska.
The development strategies to follow will ensure an economy able to strengthen the typically good quality of life enjoyed by most Alaskans and enhance prospects in rural Alaska where economic opportunity may be very limited.
