Shred Event Kicks Off National Protect Your ID Week

Anchorage, Alaska – Oct. 15, 2009 – To kick off National Protect Your Identity Week, Better Business Bureau serving Alaska, Oregon, and Western Washington provides a free shredding service.

Taking time to shred now can prevent hassle and cost later. Victims of identity theft usually spend an average of 44 hours and $500 recovering and repairing damage, according to Federal Trade Commission Reports.

Identity theft claimed more than 10 million American victims in 2008, a 22 percent increase over 2007. According to a report from Javelin Strategy and Research, low-tech methods such as swiping personal documents or property account for 43 percent of all identity theft where consumers knew how their identity was compromised.
