Sen. Begich to Address AFN Convention Saturday

Visit also includes Interagency Roundtable with Obama officials

Highlighting the success of the Economic Recovery Act in rural Alaska, progress of federal legislation impacting Alaska Natives, energy issues, and the ongoing debate over management of subsistence in Alaska, U.S. Sen. Mark Begich will address the Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) Convention Saturday. Begich's speech is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Dena'ina Civic and Convention Center.

"I am looking forward to coming back to Alaska for the AFN Convention and the many activities surrounding it," Begich said. "I spoke to the convention every year as mayor of Anchorage, and I am pleased to be invited back to address AFN as a U.S. Senator. There are many important items for us to discuss."

Sen. Begich's speech Saturday will be preceded by an Interagency Roundtable Friday afternoon. In a follow-up to President Obama's Rural Tour that brought four cabinet secretaries to Western Alaska in August, Sen. Begich is hosting federal officials for follow-up discussions. USDA Undersecretary for Rural Development Dallas Tonsager, HUD State Director Colleen Bickford, and Special Assistant for Alaska for the Department of the Interior Pat Pourchot will participate in the discussion.

The roundtable is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 23 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Voth Hall at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts.
