Oxygen & Octane Expo
Alaska's largest winter adventure show a real gas!
With a dusting of snow already on the mountains, fun winter times are nearly at hand. Be sure to start your wonderland plans and purchases with a visit to the second annual Oxygen and Octane Expo at the Dena'ina Convention Center on Friday, Oct. 16 through Sunday, Oct. 18.
Admission is free, there's ample parking nearby and there's a load of door prizes to give away at the Expo. That, coupled with the timing of Permanent Fund Dividend checks just days before the show, add up to one exciting weekend.
Alaska's premier expo facility will be filled to the limits with vendors, outdoor guides, rental and vacation properties, machines and gear, and fun for the entire family.
The only winter show endorsed by the Alaska State Snowmobile Association, the Oxygen & Octane Expo is a free event that brings locals together with the providers and equipment they need, and information they need to know.
Unofficially dubbed the "Big O" show, the inaugural Expo in 2008 was a great success, hosting an estimated 17,000 visitors and 115 vendors.
Promoters Pete Armstrong and John Woobury of Adventure Expos weren't too surprised. This event was initiated to fill a need for a comprehensive, winter-focused adventure show and pull it off by utilizing the state-of-the-art Dena'ina Convention Center in downtown Anchorage. They realized an opportunity growing, as has winter recreation, to showcase the companies, products and big toys that make Alaska winters so irresistibly exciting, as well as to inform the public of how to better enjoy winter in Alaska.
"Our goal is to show our support to the snow adventure Industries, and allow vendors and the ski and snowmachine clubs a venue to showcase all the latest snow season technology and all the great winter activities they have to offer," says Armstrong. "We believe that the Oxygen & Octane Expo can and will be the catalyst to kickoff a great and safe family winter of adventure".
In addition to snow machine dealers from the Big 4, trucks and autos, trailers, ski apparel and equipment, and clearance items, Big O has some new sights, fun and foods in store.
New this year to the Oxygen & Octane Expo is the Holiday Gas stage, with acts ranging from fashion shows to the infamous Snowshoe Shufflers can-can dancers from the Yukon. This is the only stage in Alaska where you will witness these fun and flamboyant can-can dancers, so make sure you come down and watch them shuffle their stuff!
A new beer garden will help create a more relaxed show. Have some tasty snacks and perhaps a beverage or two, slow your pace down, and get to know the vendors. The Big O is a good opportunity to create a relationship with dealers or the fellow who will be working on your sled or skis this winter.
"As with most things in life, moderation is key, but we felt this will evolve the Expo from just another trade show into an event where you can meet and make friends," says Woodbury.
Other additions that have been worked into the lineup will be unveiled on show day; Adventure Expos knows everyone loves a good surprise. And speaking of surprises, the Oxygen & Octane Expo will have door prizes and raffles that include season and 10-day passes to Alyeska Resort, day passes to Hilltop and Alpenglow, snowcat skiing with Chugach Powder Guides, chances to enter to win a snowmachine, riding gear and overnight stays at fine lodges and much, much more.
"By just walking in and visiting our vendors, you could win a winter retreat or possibly even a new sled this year!" says Woodbury.
Find Team CC, Alaska Mining and Diving and BRP hosting one of the larger booths in the exhibit hall. Last year they hung Ski-Doo snowmachines from the rafters, created a basecamp of sorts with a toy hauler and faux campfire and offer door-buster deals on new sleds. Triton Trailers also raised their trailers to the rafters, but lowered their prices to the basement; the Alaska Motor Mushers Club will be signing up racers for their season, while Alaska Toy Rental will have their rental fleet on hand. The climbing wall was also a big hit with adults and kids alike. Another Big O exclusive is the Moose Federation booth, where they will unveil their new GCI tracked rig, which they use to help keep moose off the highways, snowmachine and skiing trails all winter.
