Herron Urges Obama Administration to Restore ATG Service

(Bethel) - Representative Bob Herron, D-Bethel sent a letter
yesterday to President Barack Obama urging his administration to drop
its current policy statement in the pending defense spending bill
before Congress and support reinstatement of pension benefits to the
24 surviving Alaska Territorial Guard veterans.

"Now they are our elders, most between 85 and 90 years old. Many of
them need these hard-earned pensions," Herron writes. "You have spoken
many times about treating our brave men and women in uniform today
with respect, and providing them the support they need to resume
healthy and productive civilian lives here at home. Do their
predecessors deserve any less?"

Alaska's Future is Where it's Always Been: with Oil

Yesterday at lunch, I listened to two business people talking about
where the state is going. They summed up what's in store for the
economy by saying, "There isn't going to be a gas line, probably no
bullet line; there probably won't be a Pebble Mine or a Donlin Creek
mine; and, what will happen to the Anchorage airport if the North Pole
oil refinery shuts down?"

Not good. And it wasn't the first conversation like this I've heard

AK Transportation Hearing Thursday in Anchorage

(Anchorage) - The House Transportation Committee will hear from state
officials, The Alaska Municipal League and others tomorrow during an
all-day hearing in Anchorage on transportation needs and challenges.
The hearing is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. in the second floor
conference room of the Anchorage Legislative Information Office.

Interested reporters and members of the public are invited to attend.
Those unable to attend in person may participate by listening at their
local LIO, or by teleconference at 1-888-295-4546.

What: Hearing on Alaska's Transportation Needs & Challenges

When: Thursday, October 1, 2009 - 9:30 a.m.

The hearing follows on a two-day tour of state transportation
infrastructure, including rural airports and Southcentral surface
transportation modes, projects and issues.
