Governor Parnell Orders Flags Lowered for Fallen Marine
October 27, 2009, Anchorage, Alaska – Governor Parnell today ordered state flags to be lowered to half-staff in honor and memory of Corporal Gregory M. W. Fleury, who died in a helicopter crash Monday in Afghanistan.
“Sandy and I offer our prayers and condolences to the family and friends of our fellow Alaskan, Corporal Gregory Fleury,” Governor Parnell said. “Corporal Fleury was a valiant Marine whose service on behalf of our country will never be forgotten.”
Fleury, 23, of Anchorage, was assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 169 based at Camp Pendleton, California.
Fleury was a 2005 graduate of ServiceHigh School. He was awarded several military awards, including the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
State flags will be lowered to half-staff on Thursday, October 29. Flags will be raised to full-staff the following morning.
