Corps Releases Environmental Assessment on Buckland Water FacilityANCHORAGE - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Alaska District, is planning to construct a new water intake facility at the City of Buckland. Projected for construction in 2010 and 2011, the project would improve the community's supply of raw water from the Buckland River by constructing a horizontal infiltration gallery below the riverbed.
The structure would extend about 100 feet into the river and be connected to a small well house on shore. The riverbed profile would not be altered. Excavated soils not suitable for fill at the project site would be placed in an area of wetlands near town. Construction of the infiltration gallery within the river would take place during the late fall and winter months.
A temporary cofferdam would be installed in the river to facilitate construction of a water collection trench, a concrete well house, two water collection pipelines with electric water pumps and a water distribution line which would connect to a future city water transmission line. All parts of the facility outside the riverbed would be insulated and protected from freezing with a heater and propylene glycol circulation system.
The facility would tie into other water system and sanitation infrastructure to be constructed by the City of Buckland and the State of Alaska Village Safe Water Program.
The City of Buckland currently obtains water for domestic and fire-fighting needs from the Buckland River with a system that requires a lot of maintenance and is not adequate for present or future water demands.
The Corps of Engineers has released an Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact, available at http://www.poa.usace.army.mil/en/cw/Docs%20Available%20for%20Public%20Review/Buckland+WIF+EA2.pdf
