Anchorage’s Minnesota Drive Speed Limits Increased

(ANCHORAGE, Alaska) – The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities announced a speed limit increase along the southern segment of Minnesota Drive here

The segment of Minnesota Drive affected by the speed limit change extends from Tudor Road south and then easterly to the Old Seward Highway. The currently posted 55 MPH speed limits will be increased to 60 MPH beginning today.

Higher speeds along this highway segment have been under consideration for several years. Although the highway was built for 65 MPH speeds, and while prevailing driving habits have tended to push toward that limit, community concerns had been raised about the perceived potential for more accidents at a 65 MPH speed limit.

A recently developed “Speed Limit Evaluation Data Base”, sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, recommended a 60 MPH speed for this route.
