Legislative Tie-In Proposed Positions Online
The Alaska State Chamber of Commerce's Legislative Tie-In is set for October 28 at the Egan Convention Center, 555 W. 5th Avenue, Anchorage. All State Chamber members are encouraged to attend and participate in this important opportunity to help set Legislative Priorities for the upcoming 2010 Legislative Session.
The State Chamber will use this event to establish our priority positions supported by concise action items needed to achieve each position. Positions must have statewide impact and be consistent with the State Chamber's mission.
State Chamber members will consider these proposals to come up with the top priorities. In addition to the priorities, the State Chamber will take a position on a number of other critical issues facing the State of Alaska. The board will ratify both the priorities and positions at a Board meeting Thursday, October 29 in Anchorage.
The legislative priorities will be delivered to all sixty members of the State Legislature and the Governor. "These priorities will serve as the cornerstone of our advocacy efforts with the legislature during the upcoming session," said Caroline Higgins, Chair of the State Chamber.
State Chamber members employ the vast majority of private sectors workers. Action on our five priorities will remove barriers to job creation and create opportunities for business development.
The proposals submitted are now on our Web site, www.alaskachamber.com. Click here to view the proposals. Hard copies of the packet will be available and distributed to the membership at the start of the Legislative Tie-In meeting.

Lunch Program Narrative
Wednesday October 28, 2009
NOON - 1:30 pm
Organization: Alaska Partnership for Economic Development (APED)
Topic: Planning for Alaska's Economic Future
The Alaska Partnership for Economic Development (APED) is a consortium of economic development organizations from around the state. APED's mission is to leverage the existing economic development programs in the state and collaborate on multi-regional and statewide programs/projects.
This initiative called "Alaska Forward: Toward a Next Generation Economy" will look at the position of Alaska and its economic regions in the global economy, benchmark the state against a reference group of economic regions, and examine current approached to economic development compared to "best practices".
APED recently was awarded a $500,000 grant from the Denali Commission to begin creating a comprehensive economic development strategy for Alaska. The APED Board has selected a partnership of some of the top consultants in the country to examine today's economy and key industry trends, the state's strengths and weaknesses, and prepare the foundation for economic development strategies in Alaska.
The development strategies to follow will ensure an economy able to strengthen the typically good quality of life enjoyed by most Alaskans and enhance prospects in rural Alaska where economic opportunity may be very limited.
NOTE: This year the State Chamber will have two laptops, a printer and a copy machine available in order to make amendments to your positions! Please bring your positions on a flash drive.
All priorities and positions that are adopted at the Legislative Tie-In will be forwarded to the Board of Directors for ratification on October 29th.

Showcasing Solutions: Strengthening Alaska's Entrepreneurship and Innovation
October 29, 2009 at the Anchorage Marriott Downtown
Alaska has a long tradition of innovation. Articulating new and better ways of doing things is part of the Alaska vision and Alaskans must be intentional about change in today's economic climate of urgency and opportunity.
With this in mind, the Institute of the North and many of its partners invite you to participate in Showcasing Solutions: Strengthening Alaska's Entrepreneurship and Innovation, October 29, 2009 at the Anchorage Marriott Downtown.
Innovation and entrepreneurism do not take place in a vacuum. It is only through building relationships and platforms for idea sharing that change is inspired. This daylong forum does exactly that. With stakeholders present from across Alaska attendees will highlight many of the challenges facing Alaskans and the opportunities that exist to address them.
It is interesting to note that this forum came out of a discussion on LinkedIn. There, a community of interest grew around the idea of being able to share, build and connect with one another. At the same time, it was apparent that just another conference would not do.
Content from this event comes from those who participate, the stakeholders to whom success means the most. We have developed an agenda that celebrates your creativity and your commitment. Your comments are welcome in shaping this. Some of the ideas that have been voiced online include:
- Identifying our Investment Community
- Partnerships - the University System and Beyond
- Outreach - Building Awareness within the State
- Rural Input and Implementation
In this, we must ask ourselves how we can be intentional in developing innovation and entrepreneurship while contributing to other efforts being made toward economic development. Across the state, initiatives are coalescing as Alaskans attempt to create a shared vision for a common future. There will be many opportunities to share what we learn and hope to move forward in a diverse array of other settings. There must be a first step. Join us as we take it.
Showcasing Solutions is hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. The link to register is http://www.frbsf.org/community/resources/2009/1029/index.html
Feel free to contact us at email@example.com for more information or to indicate an interest in participation.
