Begich Officially Enrolled in Alaska Health Care Exchange

Begich Will Give Up Employer Contribution to Join Same Marketplace as Alaskans

U.S. Sen. Mark Begich today signed up for health care on Alaska’s federally facilitated marketplace, maintaining that he wants the same insurance opportunities as all Alaskans. By doing so, he will not accept a federal employer contribution. Sen. Begich officially enrolled for his health care this morning on the www.healthcare.gov website.

“I want to have the exact same experience and go through the same steps as other Alaskans when it comes to signing up for health care, which is why I have decided to refuse any federal subsidy and have signed up on Alaska’s federally run Marketplace,” said Sen. Begich.

As a member of Congress, Sen. Begich was given the option to sign up on the Washington, DC marketplace but instead opted to sign up on the Alaska marketplace, forgoing any employer contribution provided by the federal government that he was entitled to and ensuring that he has the same experience enrolling and receiving care as other Alaskans.

Sen. Begich has been a vocal critic of the Administration's mismanagement of the health care rollout thus far and he joined a select group of Senators in a two-hour meeting last week with President Obama where he voiced his frustrations. Sen. Begich demanded the administration fix the problems immediately so Alaskans, including the 55,000 eligible for subsidies to lower monthly premiums, can realize the many benefits due to them as a result of the health reform law.

“As I’ve said many times before, this law is not perfect and that is why I will continue to hold both the administration and the insurance companies accountable to ensure that Alaskans have access to the facts and are able to receive the care they want and need," said Begich.

Following the meeting, President Obama issued an apology regarding the mismanagement of the health care law roll out.
