2013 Special Olympics Alaska Bowling Tournament Draws Hundreds to Compete In Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The 2013 Special Olympics Alaska Bowling Tournament is expected to draw more than 400 athletes, coaches and volunteers to Anchorage November 22 through 24. The following seven communities will be represented at the tournament: Anchorage, Central Peninsula, Homer, Juneau, Kodiak, Mat-Su Valley and Tanana Valley.

Special Olympics Alaska is an accredited program of Special Olympics Inc., a global organization that has provided sports training and competition to people with intellectual disabilities since 1968. In Alaska, Special Olympics serves more than 2,000 athletes in nearly two dozen communities around the state through local community training programs. Athletes attending the tournament have qualified by training for several months and by participating in local community bowling tournaments.

The Special Olympics Alaska Bowling Tournament will kick off with the pageantry of opening ceremony starting at 5 p.m. at Polar Bowl, (Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson). Competition will continue throughout the weekend with hundreds of bowlers bowling a total of nine games. On Sunday, the tournament will come to an end with the closing ceremony and award presentations. Lt. Governor Mead Treadwell will be attending the closing ceremony. The Bowling Tournament is one of four major Special Olympics Alaska competitions held throughout the year. Winter Games are in March, Summer Games in June, and the Fall Tournament is in September.
