Sen. Begich 2012 Veterans Day statement
As we observe Veterans Day 2012 let us all pause to express our thanks to the few who selflessly stand in harm’s way to guarantee the freedom and security of the many.
As we welcome home the 4th Brigade Airborne Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, let’s remember where they have been, the sacrifices they made and the dangers they faced. We owe them and their families a huge debt of gratitude.
Let us also offer up our prayers and thoughts for the families of the eight Spartans that did not return from this recent deployment. They gave their all on the battlefield in the name of freedom and democracy.
We also are pleased that the members of B Company, 1st Battalion, 143rd Infantry Regiment, Alaska Army National Guard just returned from almost a year in Afghanistan protecting Provincial Reconstruction Teams. I was proud to be able to be among those greeting them as the stepped off the plane on November 8.
President John F. Kennedy, himself a veteran, once said, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.”
As we pause to remember and thank those who have served and those currently serving, we must remember that our veterans need our appreciation, help, care and commitment 365 days a year. We have promised this, they have earned this and we must never shy away from the task.
