Other characters in the story include Corporal Don Jose` and a bull fighter, Escamillo, who both fall deeply in love with Carmen. Fairbanks’ hometown mezzo soprano, Vivica Genaux, an international star in her own right, returns to Fairbanks this summer to sing the title role. This will be Genaux’s United States debut of Carmen.
Carmen will include a large chorus of men and women all ages and children as young as ages 8 conducted by Maestro Gregory Buchalter and directed by Jonathon Loy, both of the New York Metropolitan Opera. Byron McGilvray will be the Chorus Master for Carmen, which will be sung in French with English subtitles. Performances dates are July 11 and 13, 2013.
Verdi and the Bard is an original selection of scenes from Verdi’s Shakespeare-based operas—Macbeth, Falstaff and Othello. The opera scenes will be performed with a full orchestra and conducted by Dr. John Hopkins of the UAF music Department. The performance dates are October 12 and 13, 2013.
