Credit Union 1 Wins National Award for Adult Financial Education Program
Anchorage, AK – November 9, 2012– Credit Union 1 (CU1) is proud to announce that they have won the Credit Union National Association’s (CUNA) Desjardins Adult Financial Education Award. This coveted award recognizes CU1 for its outstanding leadership and efforts to teach personal finance concepts and skills to the public.
The winning entry was for CU1’s free Discover Financial Fitness classes, offered to the public, organizations, groups and clubs throughout the state of Alaska. The Discover Financial Fitness programs have assisted thousands of people since the program’s inception, to develop healthy savings and money management skills.
“A core value of credit unions is to assist their members with a better understanding of their finances so that they can make the best decisions possible with their hard-earned money,” says Bill Cheney, CUNA President and CEO.” The individuals and institutions honored with the Desjardins Awards personify this timeless value of our movement. I am honored to represent an industry that counts these award winners among its supporters.”
This award is named after innovative pioneer, Alphonse Desjardins, who founded the first credit unions in Canada and the U.S. and created youth savings clubs and school “banks,” known as caisses scolaires. Like Desjardins, CU1 believes in the philosophy of “people helping people” and that education is the first step toward community growth and success.
