Anchorage Nonprofit Organization Helps Address Alcohol and Drug Abuse in Teens

NEW YORK, Nov. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Mutual of America announced today that the Juvenile Alcohol Safety Action Program (JASAP) was named a Merit Finalist of the 2011 Community Partnership Award competition.

In Alaska, issues stemming from underage drinking, including youth violence, vehicular accidents and other problems, cost residents an estimated $317 million each year. JASAP provides case management, education and other support services for individuals, ages 13 to 20, who have been court-ordered to report for monitoring as a result of actions related to underage drinking. The program is part of Volunteers of America Alaska, which is based in Anchorage and partners with the State of Alaska District Attorney's Office, the Alaska Court System and various public and private counseling and service providers.

"The Volunteers of America JASAP program has helped more than 2,300 Alaskan youth complete treatment or alcohol abuse education since 2005," says Linda Markle, acting president and CEO. "During this time, the number of participants that completed the program and have not returned to the justice system has increased to 80 percent."
