New AFF Warehouse Facility Reaps ‘Superior’ Food Audit RatingFIFE, WASH., Nov. 8, 2010 -- American Fast Freight's (AFF) newest warehouse facility earned a "Superior" distinction as a result of an audit and inspection this month by the American Institute of Baking (AIB) International.
This rating is the highest possible score classification given by the AIB. The company's Anchorage facility was rated "Superior" by the AIB last spring.
The new Fife, Wash., 100,000-square-foot facility began operations in January 2010. Both the Fife and Anchorage locations were rated against the AIB Consolidated Standards for Food Distribution Centers. Audits evaluate a facility's adequacy of operational methods and personnel practices, maintenance for food safety, cleaning practices, integrated pest management, and the adequacy of food safety programs.
"The AIB audit was a rigorous test of our new operations in Fife and represented a new set of eyes on our policies," said AFF Corporate Safety and Security Manager Ken Staten. "The auditor left no stone unturned, including running her fingers along railings to feel for dust."
Originally created in 1919 to apply sciences to baking, AIB now provides food safety research, hygiene education and training, and it is the food industry's premier auditing organization.
Growers, processors, distributors, packaging companies, and retailers have a lot of responsibility on their shoulders with regards to food safety. Consumers of all kinds, even animals, depend upon the integrity of each step along the food chain. Industry third-party participants, like AFF, who demonstrate meticulous safety procedures, play an important role in minimizing food risks from farm to fork.
"We strive to bring a high level of service to our clients and these ratings are a great achievement," said AFF Fife Terminal Manager Jeremy LePage.
Alaska Operations Director Joel Boyd said the AIB superior rating is significant because it assures AFF's customers that their products will be handled, stored, and shipped using the same best practices as they use in their own facilities.
"We are committed to maintaining the highest level of food safety," Boyd said, "and we are very proud of the role each of our employees plays in supporting these objectives."
