Mechanical Malfunction Sidelines Ferry Aurora
(JUNEAU, Alaska) – The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) has arranged for passenger only replacement service to cover some port calls after the ferry Aurora experienced a mechanical malfunction while moored at the Auke Bay ferry terminal Tuesday night.
For reasons unknown at this time, the motor used to power Aurora’s anchor windlass seized up, rendering the system inoperable.
Meanwhile, AMHS officials have coordinated with Allen Marine Tours to provide transportation to ports aboard the vessel St. Aquilina while Aurora is being repaired and until service can be provided by the ferry Kennicott.
The Aurora sailings for Nov 4, 5 and 6 are cancelled. The vessel St Aquilina will sail between Juneau, Hoonah and Angoon tomorrow and Saturday Nov. 6 to accommodate passengers with reservations to attend previously scheduled civic events.
The Kennicott is sailing across the Gulf of Alaska and will divert to Lynn Canal arriving Saturday when it will provide service for accumulated Aurora traffic destined to Haines and Skagway.
Travelers requiring scheduling assistance may contact the AMHS Central Reservations at (907) 465-3941 or (800) 642-0066.
