Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEM)
Outer Continental Shelf Lease Sale 193 Public Hearing
Tuesday, November 9th at 7 p.m.

Centerpoint Building, 3801 Centerpoint Drive, 1st floor Conference Room, Anchorage

The Alaska State Chamber of Commerce encourages its members to participate in a very important public hearing this Tuesday, November 9th.  The hearing will begin at 7 p.m. at the Centerpoint Building, 3801 Centerpoint Drive, 1st floor conference room.

We need your support once again to urge the Federal administration to allow OCS exploration to move forward in the Chukchi Sea.  It is vital that BOEM (formerly MMS) hear from Alaskans that affirming Lease Sale 193 is critical to Alaska¹s future economy and for the nation¹s long-term energy security.  (Lease Sale 193 was held in February 2008 with Shell, ConocoPhillips and others spending a record $2.7 billion in winning bids).

Environmental groups are rallying their members to demonstrate that Alaskans do NOT support OCS development.  Let's not have them speak for us!  It is vital those supporting exploration express their opinion.

Testimony will likely be limited to three minutes.  Attached is an Action Alert provided by our friends at RDC to help you prepare some brief comments.

Chamber Offices will be closed on November 11th Veteran's Day

The offices of the Alaska State Chamber will be closed Thursday November 11 in observance of Veterans Day.  We will be open on Friday, November 12 as usual.

We are the federal government and we are here to help you save you oceans."

Does that send shivers up your spine?  If so, please consider attending the November 12, 2010 NOAA Town Hall on a national ocean policy.  The State Chamber has recently joined the National Ocean Policy Coalition specifically to make sure the Alaska economy can withstand yet another "helpful" federal policy.  The notice of invitation for the public hearing follows.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and our Federal partners invite you to a Town Hall forum for ocean stakeholders in Alaska on President Obama's new National Policy for the Stewardship of the Ocean, our Coasts, and the Great Lakes.  Dr. Larry Robinson, NOAA's Deputy Administrator will present an overview of the policy followed by a question-and-answer session.

Healthy oceans matter to our Nation's economy, our security, our health, and the American way of life.  They matter to virtually every American who drinks clean water, consumes fresh seafood, vacations along our shores or makes a living off the sea's bounty.  The National Policy offers a unified vision and brings a comprehensive approach to preserving the ocean, our coasts and the Great Lakes and their abundant natural resources (see below for the full text of the Policy.)  It also identifies nine priority objectives that will be pursued to support the National Policy, including:

.             Ecosystem-Based Management

.             Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning

.             Inform Decisions and Improve Understanding

.             Coordinate and Support

.             Resiliency and Adaptation to Climate Change and Ocean Acidification

.             Regional Ecosystem Protection and Restoration

.             Water Quality and Sustainable Practices on Land

.             Changing Conditions in the Arctic

.             Ocean, Coastal, and Great Lakes Observations, Mapping, and Infrastructure
