Bristol Environmental Recognized for Commitment to Safety
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Alaska District, Celebrate Safety Committee, recently honored Bristol Environmental Remediation Services, LLC (Bristol Remediation), with a 2010 Annual Project Safety Award. The accolade recognizes zero hours lost to injury or illness during work performed for USACE at a remote Alaska site, for the Northeast Cape (NE Cape) Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste (HTRW) Remedial Actions contract.
The scope of work consisted of the design and construction of a landfill cap to cover buried debris on an estimated 1.9 acres. In addition, Bristol Remediation excavated, sampled and removed about 3,173 tons of contaminated soils and debris from numerous sites at NE Cape, which is located on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, about 135 air miles southwest of Nome. Potential hazards at the remote site included harsh weather conditions and limited communication. Other safety obstacles included wildlife, soil contamination and injuries.
The USACE commended the Bristol team’s commitment to safety, citing an excellent overall program, emphasis on careful activity hazard analysis and communication as contributing factors. “(Bristol Remediation’s) philosophy of total management and employee involvement in safety clearly contributed to your success in safety,” said District Commander Colonel Reinhard W. Koenig, USACE, in a release dated Oct. 18, 2010.
“More than 25 people, including operators, Bristol scientific staff, and laborers from the village of Savoonga, all contributed to the success of the project,” added Project Manager Molly Welker, who oversaw operations for Bristol Remediation at the NE Cape site.
Bristol Remediation provides environmental consulting, environmental remediation, and waste characterization and disposal services to private and public sector clients. The company’s capabilities also include remediation and cleanup of contaminated sites, as well as preparation of remedial action plans and reports to support its cleanup projects.
