Retired U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran and longtime supporter of veterans and military causes across Alaska, CW Floyd, today received the Patrick Henry Award from The National Guard Association of the United States. Floyd, who serves as U.S. Sen. Mark Begich's special assistant for military and veterans affairs, was presented with the award at the annual Veterans Day ceremony at the National Guard Armory on Fort Richardson. Floyd also served in the Alaska Army National Guard from 1979 to 1985.
"We are so proud of this recognition for CW, who has served his country during Vietnam and later in the National Guard, and has continued to serve the citizens of Alaska in a variety of ways for decades," Sen. Begich said. "Military members and veterans who come to our office for assistance with benefits or other services, find an experienced professional who speaks their language and understands many of the challenges they face."
The Patrick Henry Award is designed to provide recognition to local officials and civic leaders, who in a position of great responsibility distinguish themselves with outstanding and exceptional service to the Armed Forces of the United States, the National Guard, or the National Guard Association of the United States.
In the award nomination, Floyd is recognized for his outstanding and visible service to the entire military and veterans community in Alaska in positions of increasing responsibility including the Anchorage Mayor's Military & Veterans Liaison under then-Mayor Begich; 15 years on the Alaska Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Committee; providing critical legislative support to gain federal discharges and pensions for the Alaska Territorial Guard; organizer and volunteer for Alaska Operation STANDOWN; and currently working for Sen. Begich serving veterans and the military.
"Mr. Floyd is an inspirational role model for selfless service in support of our total Homeland Security Team and the National Guard of the United States," the award states.
