Begich Responds to Pew Report
U.S. Sen. Mark Begich issued the following statement in reaction to a report released today by the Pew Environment Group on resource development in the Arctic Ocean:
“Pew’s report echoes many of the recommendations contained in my legislation and others pending before Congress. However, I disagree with Pew’s insistence on an unspecified moratorium on Arctic development, because the perfect set of conditions simply never occurs. I’ll continue to push the Obama administration for responsible Arctic development now to help meet America’s energy, national and economic security.
“There’s no dispute that the Arctic Ocean holds enormous natural resources, from oil and gas to fisheries. The impacts of climate change mean those resources are becoming increasingly more accessible for development and the Arctic Ocean will soon be a regular transit point for international shipping.
“Arctic resource development and transportation can be done responsibly while protecting the other important values of the region, especially the fish and wildlife vital to the subsistence way of life for residents of Alaska’s North Slope. That’s why I have introduced a comprehensive package of legislation designed to provide the resources and safeguards for responsible Arctic resource development.”###
