JUNEAU, Nov. 20, 2009 The SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) is pleased to announce that Mitchell Wilkinson, DDS, has joined the dental provider staff at the SEARHC Juneau Dental Clinic as the consortium's first staff prosthodontist in a couple of years.

As SEARHC's prosthodontist, Dr. Wilkinson will specialize in the placement of crowns, bridges and dentures. Previously, SEARHC had to hold specialty clinics with traveling prosthodontists in order to provide these services.

"SEARHC is excited to have Dr. Wilkinson on staff," said Dr. Tom Bornstein, DDS, SEARHC Director of Dental Services. "He brings a broad scope of knowledge to our program as well as an enthusiasm to restore people's smiles. He is based in Juneau and is looking into ways to provide some services to other SEARHC communities."

Dr. Wilkinson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the University of Texas Permian Basin in Odessa. He earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the Texas A&M Health Science Center/Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, which also is where he completed his residency in prosthodontics. Dr. Wilkinson also earned a Master of Science degree in oral biology from Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

During his career, Dr. Wilkinson spent 17 years in private prosthodontics practice in Austin, Texas, and he spent two years as a hospital prosthodontist with Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas. He also has been an assistant professor of surgery at the Texas A&M Health Science Center/Baylor College of Medicine. In 1988, he won a Munksgaard International Publishers Award for an article, "Treatment of the Geriatric Patient."

"The time I have spent in Juneau has been one of the most memorable experiences in my life," Dr. Wilkinson said. "I am very interested in Native culture, and the interaction with the patients has been both educational and rewarding."

Dr. Wilkinson's medical interests include maxillofacial prosthetics, anaplastology, treatment of pre- and post-radiation head and neck cancer patients, implants, partials, dentures, fixed bridgework and research. He also enjoys horses, saddle-making (Native American and Western), archery and the guitar.
