Arctic Valley Ski Area Gearing-up for Winter

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, November 12, 2009 - On Nov. 11, the Anchorage Ski Club (ASC) Board of Directors
unanimously committed to plan for winter operations at Arctic Valley Ski
Area this season. "In response to the overwhelming support of our members
and the community, the Board made the commitment to open - however, we are
counting on the community''s continued support to guarantee a successful
winter season," exclaimed Beverly Luedke-Chan, ASC Director and Operations
Committee Chair.

Despite being only 15 miles from Anchorage, the volunteer-run ski club has
not seen their skier days increase enough to cover increased expenses in
recent years.  "We are constantly fighting misconceptions that the area
closed, that the conditions are usually poor and that the road is
difficult. These rumors are simply not true," lamented Jennifer
Gordon, the club's volunteer liaison.  "We have never closed to the
public.  The military ski area closed in the '90's, and they were located
right next door to us, but we have remained open to the public since the
1940's.  In the winter there is almost never a lift-line, so finding
untracked snow somewhere is nearly guaranteed and the wide, graded road
can be so much easier than getting to Flat Top!""

Over 100 ASC members and patrons voted to open if at all possible at an
emergency membership meeting held at the Kincaid Chalet on October 28.
That night, over $15,000 was raised in pledges and over 30 individuals
volunteered to join the Board of Directors and its committees. Since then,
the club has worked furiously to meet immediate expenses with a membership
drive and work-parties to tackle the long list of annual tasks necessary
to run a fun and safe ski area.  With the recent support, the ASC is on
their way to meeting their financial requirements.

The Anchorage Ski Club welcomes the entire community to enjoy Arctic
Valley this winter.  They also NEED YOU to get involved by joining the
club, volunteering and making a contribution towards this valuable
non-profit community resource.  Memberships fees, pledges and
donations can be made online via the website www.skiarctic.net.

Come help us celebrate at our Annual Season Kick-Off Party Friday,
December 4th at Skinny Raven Sports downtown.  6:30-9:00 pm.  Go
