In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital (MEH) is offering free 3D mammogram screening to women who make an appointment in October. 3D mammography is the latest breakthrough in early breast cancer detection and is only available in Sitka at Mount Edgecumbe Hospital.

SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) was recently awarded a $927,871 grant for breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as part of the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP). The annual grant supports breast cancer screenings (mammograms), cervical cancer screenings (Pap tests), diagnosis, and case management at SEARHC facilities throughout Southeast Alaska for five years, potentially bringing more than 4.6 million dollars to the region to help patients. This funding includes support for the mobile mammogram vehicle that travels by ferry to multiple rural Southeast Alaska communities without access to mammography.

Last week, SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) completed its latest Operational Site Visit conducted by the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA), the agency that provides grant funding dedicated to the operation of our primary care clinics outside of Juneau and Sitka. The visit was extremely successful with the preliminary HRSA report showing SEARHC met 100% of the 19 measured criteria.
