The Iditarod Trail Committee (ITC) announced today that Northrim Bank is the newest member of the Iditarod’s sponsorship family, signing on as a Lead Dog sponsor for the 2018 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. This new partnership offers Northrim Bank broader outreach and engagement in communities statewide, with the designation as the “Official Bank” of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

The annual World Eskimo-Indian Olympic Games (WEIO) will take place at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks from July 19 through 22, 2017. A four-day series of traditional Alaska Native athletic competitions, WEIO draws Native athletes and dancers from around the state, the United States, Canada and Greenland, as well as visitors, fans and media from around the globe. In addition to athletic competitions, WEIO also offers indigenous dances, authentic arts and crafts for sale, beauty pageants and other cultural activities.

The Alaska Airlines Foundation is awarding $161,500 to 15 nonprofits in Alaska and Washington. The mid-year grants are the first of two donations the Alaska Airlines Foundation will make this year.

Seasoned aviation executive tapped to lead Ravn

Ravn Air Group (“Ravn”), a leading provider of air transportation and logistics services in Alaska, announced today that it has tapped one of the airline industry’s most experienced executives to grow Alaska’s largest airline. Dave Pflieger will join Ravn as its new president, chief executive officer and member of its board of directors. Bob Hajdukovich, the airline’s current president and CEO, will be elevated to vice chairman of the board. Both new positions will be effective August 8, 2017.

Natural Resources Commissioner Andy Mack announced today that Ethan Tyler will join the Department of Natural Resources as director of the Division of Parks & Outdoor Recreation on July 17.

Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center re-opened

The Juneau District Ranger has re-opened the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center and all connected trails for the remainder of today, after closing this morning to support the Juneau Police Department’s investigation of a break-in. The site and surrounding trails were closed for visitor safety earlier this morning when security cameras caught someone breaking in to the visitor center and the Discovery Southeast bookstore within.
