Anchorage Concert Association’s annual presentation of the holiday classic kicks off the season
The Anchorage Concert Association starts the holiday season for thousands of Alaskans when the curtain goes up on their presentation The Nutcracker, featuring Eugene Ballet Company Thanksgiving weekend in the Atwood Concert Hall. An annual tradition for some families and an opportunity to introduce children and grandchildren to the Mouse King and Sugar Plum Fairy for the very first time for others, this fantastical masterpiece transports audiences to a magical wonderland.

With a $4,075 grant the Alutiiq Museum will purchase five works of art for its permanent collection. The pieces are the creations of four Kodiak artists, Alf Pryor, Genevieve Opheim, and Jonathan and Hanna Sholl.

A new online radio station has launched in Alaska, providing 24 hours of daily streaming content. The RIVR, Rising Indigenous Voices Radio, is now live at www.therivr.net and plays a curated selection of pop, hip-hop, alternative and EDM music as well as a regular rotation of contemporary indigenous music and nationally syndicated podcasts.

Melissa Etheridge opens Anchorage Concert Association season

Legendary live performer Melissa Etheridge brings her raspy vocals and soulful songs to Alaska for the first time this September. The Grammy- and Oscar-winning musician became one of the most popular recording artists of the 90s with her confessional lyrics, signature voice and exuberant guitar playing. She opens Anchorage Concert Association’s 2017/2018 season with back-to-back performances Sept. 14-15 in the Atwood Concert Hall.

Christina Thompson to Organize Alutiiq Museum Events

The Alutiiq Museum has hired Christina Thompson as its Events Specialist. Thompson will coordinate and advertise the museum’s events, working in collaboration with staff to host both recurring museum programs and special initiatives. She is currently organizing Alutiiq Culture Fest, a community celebration to be held in conjunction with the museum’s annual meeting on Friday, September 8th. This event will include free fry bread, a headdress pageant, and an exhibit preview. Thompson will also facilitate the museum’s fall lecture series, Thursday evening presentations by local culture bearers and scientists beginning August 24th. The eight-week series is sponsored by the City of Kodiak.

Jontue Hollingsworth, owner of graphic design company Headron Collider, says design “has always been a part of me; I’ve always been creative.” It was while Hollingsworth was attending college to study industrial technology that he learned graphic design is a career “where I could be a professional and be creative at the same time.” He switched his major two years into school.
