New commander leads Corps engineer detachment

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Alaska District received a new commander of the 62nd Engineer Detachment (Forward Engineer Support Team - Advance).
Capt. Andrew Scott leads the small engineering field force unit that deploys quickly to support military operations at war and disaster relief missions after serving as the Headquarters and Headquarters Company commander for the 6th Engineer Battalion at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
Besides the commander, the detachment consists of a noncommissioned officer-in-charge as well as civilian employees filling the roles of geographic information system specialist, contract specialist, and civil, environmental, mechanical, and electrical engineers.
Since activating in 2010, the unit has deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan in support of overseas contingency operations in addition to participating in military exercises in the Philippines.
Originally from Jonesville, Mich., Scott earned a bachelor’s degree in military history from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y, and master’s degree in geological engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology.
Scott was commissioned into the air defense artillery in 2006. He served as a platoon leader, battery executive officer and intelligence officer with the 3rd Battalion (Airborne), 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment at Fort Bragg, N.C. He was also plans officer with the 6th Engineer Battalion.
His military schooling and training includes the Air Defense Officer Basic Course, Basic Officer Leader Course II, Engineer Captains Career Course, Airborne School, Jumpmaster School, Explosive Ordnance Clearance Agent Course, Unit Movement Officer Course, Cold Weather Orientation Course and Joint Engineer Orientation Course.
Scott’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Senior Parachutist Badge and Chilean, German, Australian, Dutch and Moroccan Parachutist badges.
