Funny River Fire behavior moderates

(Soldotna, AK)  Fire is still an active part of the Kenai Peninsula’s environment; even as temperatures cool and the relative humidity increases. The extreme fire behavior of the Funny River Fire has moderated with the recent change in the weather.  A significant amount of rain fall would be needed before forestry and fire officials would consider declaring the fire out.

The burn closures for the entire Kenai Peninsula and the Municipality of Anchorage is still in effect. The Alaska Division of Forestry and the State Forester, in coordination with Federal land managers, have determined that it is necessary to prohibit the use of all open fires and activities which unduly increase the fire danger in these areas.

When the closures are rescinded, citizens are to follow the instructions on their burn permits.  Forestry appreciates the efforts of everybody in keeping wildland fire starts to a minimum.

So far this season there have been 179 human caused fires for a total of 185,898 acres burned compared to one lightning caused fire for a total of six acres.
