Alaska Fire Service: Prescribed Fires at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson

FAIRBANKS – The Bureau of Land Management Alaska Fire Service will assist the U.S. Army Garrison-Alaska with the coordination and implementation of prescribed fires at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson approximately five miles north and east of Anchorage. Ignition on the Small Arms Complex, Multipurpose Training Range (MPTR), Infantry Platoon Battle Course (IPBC), Infantry Squad Battle Course (ISBC), and Malemute Drop Zone is scheduled for May 6 and may continue through Sunday, May 18 as weather conditions permit.

The purpose of the prescribed fires is to eliminate dried grass build up and to reduce the potential for wildfire. The prescribed fires help to reduce fire danger during the summer months and increase training opportunities in support of military readiness. The prescribed fires follow federally approved burn plans and open burn approvals from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. Trained personnel will monitor the burn areas during the prescribed fire period and for several days after the burns are complete.

Fire will only be ignited when suitable weather conditions exist and air quality will not be affected. Smoke from the prescribed fire may be visible from Eagle River, Anchorage, Fort Richardson, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Chugiak, Point Mackenzie and Alaska Hwy 1.
