Time Running Out to Register for 2013 Alaska Business Week High School Leadership Program
A limited number of scholarships are still available for the Alaska Business Week high school leadership program to be held at UAF from June 1 through 8 this year. Deadline for applications is May 15. This program is open to all high school students finishing 9th through 12 grade as of May 2013. Free transportation is available for participants from the Anchorage bowl area, and ERA Alaska is offering free round-trip airfare for students coming from rural areas of the state. Alaska Airlines is also offering a 5% discount from cities throughout Alaska. Students need to apply to the program to be eligible for the free transportation and discount codes.
The Alaska Business Week program is a summer high school leadership program that gives high school students a hands-on experience in running a business. It inspires leadership skills and confidence in participants, and many students reflect on what they want to do in life - and that they have the abilities to do so. Students experience college life and make life-long friends in the process.
It is modeled after the very successful and long-running Washington Business Week program, and is now a college-level program, endorsed by the UAF School of Management as a two-credit elective course. Students earn these credits by being actively involved in team efforts to run a complex business model, while striving to attain new heights in their leadership capabilities.
Over the past three years, 174 students from 35 communities have participated in the program and over 100 students are expected to attend this summer.
As one mother explained that her daughter “believed that she is the future and she will make it happen! She is so determined to make something out of her life, and Alaska Business Week has been a life-changing experience!”
Tuition for this program is $475.00. This covers housing, food, tuition fees and program materials for the entire week of June 1 through 8 at UAF. The actual cost of the program is close to $2,000 per student, and expenses are offset by the generous donations of many Alaskan companies, including BP, Tesoro Alaska, Icicle Seafoods, Northrim Bank, the Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce, Soldotna Chamber of Commerce, First Choice Health, Premera Blue Cross, and TOTE. Scholarships are available and free transportation to Fairbanks is available for most applicants. The on-line application is available at: www.uafleadership.com.
Alaska businesses will need qualified, educated young Alaskans to assume leadership positions in the future. Alaska high school students will some day become our future leaders. What better way to get them started on this track to groom them for future leadership positions - a very wise investment indeed!
