Governor Parnell Issues Statement on Coast Guard’s Arctic Strategy
May 23, 2013, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell issued the following statement on the newly released U.S. Coast Guard Arctic Strategy, which recognizes Alaska’s important role in the Arctic. The report calls for, in part, an increased Coast Guard presence in the Alaska Arctic and the summer deployment of aircraft, vessels and personnel to strategic locations in the Arctic.
“The coastline of Alaska is more than 44,000 miles long, so we welcome the Coast Guard’s effort to address the unique challenges that come with a changing Arctic environment. With our two international borders of Canada and Russia, and ocean passages receiving increased maritime traffic, Alaska stands ready to work with the federal government to ensure the safety and security of our waters as we expand Arctic infrastructure and grow opportunities for Alaskans.”
