Begich Comments on Joint Session of Congress with South Korea President
U.S. Sen. Mark Begich issued the following reaction today to the speech by South Korean President Park Geun-hye to a joint session of the U.S. Congress today. As chair of the Senate Korean Caucus, Begich helped escort President Park to the podium of the House Chambers for her speech:
“President Park delivered an impassioned speech which demonstrated both her nation’s economic progress and partnership with the United States and serious threat from her North Korean neighbor. Both are issues important to Alaska.”
“As Alaska’s third leading trade partner, South Korea is a vital economically to our state and the thousands of Korean-Americans who call Alaska home enrich our communities. At a same time, Alaska serves as the front lines of defense against North Korean aggression with our ground-based missile defense system at Fort Greely.
“President Park’s visit to America this week underscored our nation’s strong commitment to South Korea and to the promise of freely elected democracies across the globe. It was an honor to meet her.”
