Valley Residential Services open house celebration of Swanson House

Valley Residential Services (VRS) is planning an open house celebration of Swanson House on Thursday, May 24th. Located on 545 E. Swanson Avenue, Swanson House is the third and final phase of the Yenlo Square residential development. Situated on 3 acres in downtown Wasilla and within walking distance to a variety of necessary services, Yenlo Square has a total of 44 residential units and one commercial enterprise.  With 20 units at Yenlo Condos and 14 units at Yenlo Apartments, the last piece of this development, Swanson House will have 10 SRO (single room occupancy) residential units, five single units upstairs and 5 family units downstairs.

Swanson House is intended to address the needs of homeless and individuals and families who might otherwise be couch surfing or living in their vehicles or church basements.  This facility is intended to be affordable for low to very income level people and will provide a safe and secure location for them to reside. Each resident will sign a lease of at least three months and there will be a social worker on site to provide supportive services to residents to explore permanent housing options.

Swanson House is a Five Star Energy rated facility that includes heated floors to help keep operating costs to a minimum. Each room, ranging from 200 to 250 sq. feet will be furnished, hotel-styled to include a bed(s), armoire, table and chairs, a small kitchenette that features a sink, microwave, and small refrigerator, and a TV with services provided by MTA at a reduced rate.

Funding for the construction and supportive services of Swanson House comes from the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC) and the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority (AMHTA). Swanson House will be owned and managed by Valley Residential Services who currently owns and manages some 30 properties with 168 residential units in the Mat-Su area.
