Community rallies to thank outgoing superintendent Carol Comeau
Alaska Communications, Alaska USA Federal Credit Union, Conoco Phillips, Exxon Mobil and the Nerland Agency have each thrown in their support to help United Way of Anchorage host a community event to thank outgoing Anchorage School District superintendent Carol Comeau for her 12 years of leadership and more than 32 years serving in the district. The event will be held at the Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center on Thursday, May 31.
Carol Comeau’s Retirement Event is a fundraiser for 90% by 2020, a broad community effort to raise on-time graduation rates in Anchorage to 90 percent by the year 2020. Today, graduation rates are at 72 percent, an increase of 12 percent since the movement began in 2006.
“Carol’s vision and her unyielding commitment to our youth has been instrumental in creating the 90% by 2020 movement,” said Michele Brown, President, United Way of Anchorage. “The community wide May 31 event is an exciting way to thank and honor Carol and to celebrate our youth and ourcommitment to see youth succeed.”
The event features students and teachers, live performances and special guest tributes. A yearbook is available for guests to create a personal message for Carol.
“We have tremendous support from both the public and private businesses to host this celebration. It shows that the community can rally together and make graduation a top priority,” said Brown.
More than 50 organizations from all sectors have joined forces as Anchorage United for Youth to trumpet on-time graduation and the opportunities it opens for young people. Together, the partners take strategic actions designed to achieve the bold goal of an increased graduation rate.
Tickets are still available for the event at 90by2020.org, discounted tickets for teachers are also available. The celebration starts at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 31 in the Dena’ina Center Ballroom.
