Anchorage Schools Help Cleanup on "Super Sweeper Saturday"

Anchorage, AK- The Anchorage Chamber of Commerce will again kick off its annual Anchorage Chamber Citywide Cleanup Week, May 12 to 19, by partnering with local K-12 schools in its "Super Sweeper" program, held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 12 throughout Anchorage.

Now in its 44th year, the "Super Sweeper" program challenges students from more than 80 elementary, middle, private and high schools to pick up trash with their families around their schools and neighborhoods.
A complete list of participating schools is available online at Anchoragechamber.org.

"The 'Super Sweeper' program is a wonderful opportunity for local kids and their families to spend time together while improving our community," says Anchorage Chamber president Sami Glascott. "Anchorage will benefit from the efforts of these students as it also sets a precedent for future students."

One student from each participating school will receive an iPod Shuffle® for their efforts, courtesy of Princess Tours.

Residents also picking up trash on Super Sweeper Saturday can drop their filled orange trash bags off at any participating school before 2 p.m. for pick up. This is the only time during Citywide Cleanup Week that trash will be picked up. Otherwise, orange bags can be delivered to the Anchorage Regional Landfill, Central Transfer Station, or Girdwood Transfer Station during Citywide Cleanup Week for free.

"The 'Super Sweeper' program is right in line with our commitment to Alaska - to safeguard the land and sea in which we operate, as well as to support programs that strive toward that goal," said Bruce Bustamante, vice president of community & public affairs at Princess Tours.
