Campfires in State Parks Red Flag Warnings and High Fire Danger
(Anchorage, AK) – With the issuance of the suspension of permitted open burning on the Kenai Peninsula and in the Mat-Su Valley, the Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation would like to remind park visitors to use caution during this very high fire danger period.
The suspension of permitted burning does not prohibit park visitors from building a campfire in the fire rings provided at camping and day use areas in state parks.
Backcountry campers are requested to build fires only if needed for warming and cooking and to use extreme caution. Fires should be built on a gravel base, completely extinguished before leaving the campsite.
The use of a portable campstove is encouraged by all campers during these dry and windy conditions here in Southcentral Alaska.
