Young Mourns the Loss of Great Friend and Leader
Washington, D.C. - Alaskan Congressman Don Young issued the following statement on the death of his friend and former Alaska Governor Walter J. Hickel:
"Last night, Alaska lost not only a great Governor and a true champion, but also a good friend and a real Alaskan.
"For those who knew him, Governor Hickel was a dreamer and a self-made man. Throughout his life, he helped shepherd Alaska through statehood, the construction of the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline and the aftermath of the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
"From his earliest days as a boxer, Gov, Hickel never ceased to be a fighter. His courage, tenacity and independence helped to show everyone around him, and the rest of the Lower 48, what it really meant to be an Alaskan.
"My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Ermalee, his six sons and the rest of the Hickel family."
