State Land Sale 2010 Remote Recreational Cabin Sites - Offering #10

(Anchorage, AK) – The Department of Natural Resources encourages Alaska residents to participate in the 2010 Remote Recreational Cabin Sites land sale lottery.  The deadline to apply for the 2010 lottery is Tuesday, June 1.

The Remote Recreational Cabin Sites program is in the tradition of Alaska’s stake-it-yourself land sales.  It allows eligible Alaska residents to stake a parcel of state land in a designated staking area, lease the land until survey and appraisal are complete, and purchase the parcel at fair market value.

A total of 155 staking authorizations will be awarded to successful applicants.  Four areas are being offered in the Northern and Southcentral Regions:  Redlands, White Mountain, North Fork Big River, and Ugak Bay.

The application period begins Friday, April 16, and ends at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, June 1.

The 2010 brochure and application forms are available free of charge at many DNR offices or online at dnr.alaska.gov.  The brochure can be mailed for a $2.00 postage and handling fee.  There is a $25 filing fee per staking area and applications are accepted online, in person, by mail, or by fax.

Staking authorizations will be awarded by lottery if the number of applications exceeds the available authorizations for an area.  The lottery drawing will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, June 18, 2010.  Applicants do not need to be present to win.  Successful applicants may begin staking cabin sites on July 16, 2010 and must finish by January 31, 2011.

The land offered is not easily accessible.  These areas are best reached by plane or boat.  Some others can be reached by ATV, snowmachine, or foot.  Alaskans that have participated in recent years say they have found staking their parcel challenging, fun, and personally rewarding as this is a unique opportunity that exemplifies one of the many ways life in Alaska is unlike any other place on earth.
