Open Burning Suspension on the Kenai
(Soldotna, AK) Open burning has been suspended on the Kenai Peninsula as of 4:30 PM on Wednesday, May 26, due to dry conditions. Residents should check any fires they have lit in the past month to ensure that they are completely out.
Campfires and burn barrels built to approved safety standards have not been suspended, but individuals must use caution and ensure that there is no wind and adequate clearance from vegetation. Any person who lights a fire is responsible for it and may face criminal charges and be held liable for fire suppression costs if it gets away.
The FireWise tip for this time of the year is to rake, mow and water grass in the 100’ defensible space zone around structures for improved protection in the event of a wildland fire in the vicinity.
