Governor Parnell Orders Flags Lowered for Former Lawmaker
May 11, 2010, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell ordered state flags to be lowered to half-staff on May 19 in honor and memory of former Senator Shirley Craft. She died May 8 at the age of 82. In 1991, Craft was appointed by Governor Hickel to fill the vacancy created by the death of Senator Bettye M. Fahrenkamp of Fairbanks. Craft served until 1993. She started her career as an educator in Ketchikan and served for 19 years as principal at JoyElementary School in Fairbanks. “Sandy and I were saddened to hear of the passing of Senator Craft,” Governor Parnell said. “Alaska is grateful for Senator Craft’s service and for her commitment to education.” Craft is survived by her son, James C. Craft. Governor Parnell has ordered state flags to be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday, May 19. Flags will be raised to full-staff the following morning.
