Good Eats for Great Causes at the Visitor Industry Charity Walk
Anchorage, Alaska – April 30, 2010 – Sample some of the best food Anchorage has to offer, burn calories and raise money for Alaska charities during the 11th annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk (VICW) Friday, May 7, 2010.
Also known as the “5K Buffet,” walkers start at the Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center at 6 p.m., and then travel through downtown Anchorage, stopping for tasty snacks at food stations that dot the route. The 5K event winds up back at the Dena’ina Center for the grand finale featuring dessert, live entertainment, a beer and wine garden, kids activities and prize drawings. Everyone in the community is invited to take part as an individual or a team. Either way, participants will be raising money to support dozens of local charities.
“It’s a fun, all-inclusive way for the whole family to get out and spend time together on a beautiful spring day,” said VICW Chair and Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau President & CEO Julie Saupe “At the same time, they can help the great causes that enrich our lives and our community,” she added.
The Visitor Industry Charity Walk was established in 2000 to raise awareness about the many ways in which Anchorage’s tourism industry gives back to the community. It also provides a fun way for charities to raise funds for their causes. In the decade since its inception, the idea has spread to other Alaska communities. Fairbanks holds its own walk the following week.
Since the first walk, the visitor industry-hosted event has raised more than a million dollars for Alaska charities, with tens of thousands of walkers raising funds for their causes. Last year’s event alone generated $41,000 for Anchorage charities.
Individual registration is $30 per adult and $15 per child (ages 5 – 18). After May 3, late registration is $40 per adult and $25 per child. Teams that raise $500 or more can choose which charity gets the funds raised.

Registration and bib pick-up is scheduled for Monday, May 3, 2010, at the Crowne Plaza Anchorage in midtown. Late registration takes place May 7 at the start of the walk at the Dena’ina Center. The Anchorage Convention & Visitors Bureau’s (ACVB) mission is to attract and serve visitors to the Municipality of Anchorage as a Destination Marketing Organization (DMO). ACVB’s marketing functions are funded by one-third of the bed tax collected by lodging associations. One-third goes to the Municipality’s general fund, and one-third to service the bond debt and operations of the Anchorage Convention Centers.
