Fire Danger Advisory for Low Humidity on the Kenai
(Soldotna, AK) On Tuesday, May 18, the Alaska Division of Forestry Kenai-Kodiak Area has issued a Fire Danger ADVISORY due to a forecast for low relative humidity in advance of an approaching low pressure system. Low humidity increases the likelihood that a wildfire ignition would occur from a spark in fine surface fuels, such as grass, and sustain combustion with moderate to vigorous fire behavior.Residents are advised to carefully evaluate burn site conditions and follow the terms of their burning permit, especially clearance from cured grasses. BURNING PERMITS ARE NOT VALID DURING WINDY CONDITIONS.
Residents must call each day to the phone number listed on their burning permit to check on restrictions and record his/her burn. For more information visit: http://forestry.alaska.gov/burn or call 260-4269 or your local fire department. The FireWise Tip for today is to rake, mow, and water grassy areas in the 100 foot defensible space zone around structures.
