DNR MEDIA RELEASE-Kenai Peninsula-Open Burning Suspension
(Soldotna, AK) Due to high winds, open burning has been suspended on the Kenai Peninsula as of 2 pm on Monday, May 10th. Rainfall is expected, but until precipitation is actually received, a fire started during these conditions would spread very fast. After a change in the weather has reduced the fire danger, individuals may call the phone number listed on their burning permit to see if the suspension has been lifted.
The use of campfires has not been suspended, but Forestry discourages the lighting of any fire during windy conditions. A person may face criminal charges and be held liable for fire suppression costs and damages if they fail to control a fire that they ignite. The FireWise tip for spring is to move firewood piles and rake leaves from around structures. For a FREE FireWise visit to help identify wildfire risk to your property on the Kenai Peninsula, call 260-4260.
