Begich Appointed to National Scholarship Board
Truman Scholarship Foundation focuses on public service fields
Building on a commitment to provide affordable and accessible higher education opportunities to young Alaskans, U.S. Sen. Mark Begich has been appointed to the Board of Trustees for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation.
Sen. Begich joins a 15 member Board of Trustees chaired by former Secretary of State Madeline Albright. Two seats on the board are reserved for senators, who are selected by their colleagues to serve on the Board.“I am honored to play a role in providing some of our countries best and brightest with the opportunity to pursue a post-graduate education,” Begich said. “I am proud to bring an Alaska perspective to this national foundation that supports the advancement of future leaders in a number of public service fields.”
Established in 1975, the Truman Scholarship Foundation supports college juniors pursuing graduate degrees in public service. The mission of the foundation is to find and recognize those with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to careers in government, nonprofit or advocacy fields, education or some other aspect of public service. Each state is guaranteed a scholarship recipient.
Sen. Begich joins the board as a former chair of the Alaska Student Loan Corporation and former member of the University Of Alaska Board Of Regents.
