Walgreens Opens Alaska Stores
National retailer Walgreens was due to open its first Alaska store in Wasilla in July, followed by two Anchorage stores debuting later in summer. The company, based in Deerfield, Ill., expected to hire about 100 new employees, from pharmacists to assistant managers and hourly positions. The two Anchorage stores are located at Dimond Boulevard and Northwood Drive and at Creekside Street and Debarr Road. The Wasilla store is located at the George Parks and the Palmer-Wasilla highways. With the opening of the Alaska stores, the drugstore chain will have stores in all 50 states, for a total of 6,783 stores. The three Alaska Walgreens stores will be between 13,800 and 14,800 square feet and will include many locally produced products. Walgreens product buyers met with more than 100 Alaska product suppliers, distributors and business owners last August during the Walgreens Vendor Fair to consider uniquely Alaskan merchandise appealing to both local residents and visitors shopping at the new Alaska stores. Each location will feature a heated drive-through pharmacy, as well as heated sidewalks, heated parking spaces for people with disabilities and heated aprons around the front doors.
