Shiloh Community Development Empowerment Conference March 28-30, 2014
Anchorage, Alaska - Shiloh Community Development, Incorporated (SCDI) - a local non-profit 501-C-3 organization that empowers youth, minorities and the disadvantaged will host their first dedicated 3-day empowerment conference, March 28th through March 30th at West Anchorage High School (1700 Hill Crest Drive) and in the gymnasium at Shiloh Baptist Church, 855 E. 20th Avenue. On Friday March 28th at Shiloh Church, the free conference kicks off with a job fair in partnership with the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development from 9-4 PM in the gymnasium, a "Far North Girls Mentorship Recruiting Reception (ages 8-19) to enhance the development of young girls and a Young Lions Mentorship Recruiting Reception for young boys (ages 8-19) from 4-6 PM in conference room 310 and 312, a Multi-Cultural Education Concerns Advisory Committee Meeting in the gymnasium from 6-8 PM and a Basketball Camp Gateway to Youth Mentoring Program at 8:30 PM in the gymnasium.
On Saturday, March 29th at West Anchorage High School, the conference agenda includes a health fair, in partnership with the Alaska Health Fair, Inc. in the cafeteria from 8 AM to 12 PM. In partnership with the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, 2-hour forums will take place in the auditorium beginning at 8 AM on Education, Health, Economics and Justice. The Justice forum includes a piece on Media bias with presenters from both KTVA and KTUU. Speakers include judges, superintendents, doctors, city and state representatives, presidents of various companies and more. A Youth Education Summit will occur from 4-6 PM organized in partnership with the Polynesian Association of Alaska and local youth from our diverse community. The evening concludes with a Diversity Benefit Concert from 7PM-9PM in the auditorium of West Anchorage High School. Diverse choirs and local soloists, along with the East High Jazz Band and recording artist, songwriter, minister and humanitarian, Fabrice "Breeze" Clerger from Florida will perform.
The conference concludes on Sunday, March 30th from 4-6 PM in the gymnasium of Shiloh Church with a Legislative Information Session and Assembly Candidate's Forum in partnership with the League of Women Voters of Anchorage moderated by Rhoda McBride of Channel 11, KTVA. Three subjects will be discussed during the Legislative Information Session: School Choice - Wanda Greene-Laws (NAACP president) vs former Mayor Tink Fink (former Mayor); SB21 - Aces Oil Tax Reform - Ray Metcalfe (former Representative) vs Andrew Halcro (pres Anchorage Chamber of Commerce) and Minimum Wage Increase w/Vice Beltrami vs TBD. The Assembly candidate's forum follows immediately after the legislative session.
