Browder announces retirement; Anchorage School Board names Graff next superintendent

Chief Academic Officer becomes district's leader

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - March 14, 2013 - Superintendent Jim Browder notified the Anchorage School Board that he will retire, effective June 14, 2013.

"We all want what is best for this district and our students however, given my family's medical situation, I've determined retirement is the best option," Browder told the board. "Unfortunately in life, things happen that we cannot plan or prepare for, but must still move forward in the best interest of everyone involved. In my time here, there are many good things I'm proud to say we've accomplished. The district is moving in the right direction and I appreciate the collaboration and cooperation I have received from the board, staff and community."

Today the board unanimously agreed to name Ed Graff, the district's Chief Academic Officer, the new superintendent of ASD.

"I look forward to this exciting opportunity to continue with the initiatives set forth by the board and district leadership," said Graff. "This district has outstanding potential. I'm ready to lead us in realizing that potential and move us to the next level.

Board President Jeannie Mackie said Browder and Graff will work together over the next 90 days to transition the duties of the superintendency.

"I want to thank Dr. Browder for the hard work he's done. We've seen a lot of great things happening in the district this year and it is unfortunate he could not stay longer to see the positive outcomes of his efforts," said Mackie. "However, we must move forward and we are pleased Mr. Graff shares our vision for Destination 2020 and has accepted our offer to lead the district."

The board will formally vote on the change at its regular meeting on Monday.
