House Votes to Update Vehicle Weight Laws (HB271)
Advances in technology and vehicle design outpaced state’s class restrictions
Friday, March 2, 2012, Juneau, Alaska – Small businesses and truckers across Alaska stand to benefit from a bill passed by the Alaska House today.
House Bill 271, sponsored by Rep. Wes Keller, R-Wasilla, raises the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating from 10,000 pounds to 14,000 pounds. That change is necessary, said Keller, after modern engineering and design have made light trucks and commercial vehicles much safer.
“When the current law was written vehicles were much smaller and less advanced than they are today,” Keller said. “The rules currently restrict many smaller vehicles used by businesses like lawn care companies, plumbers and builders. We’re opening up opportunities for businesses by stripping burdensome regulations. That’s a good thing. The old restrictions aren’t necessary anymore.”
HB 271 now moves to the Alaska Senate for consideration.
